Actor Samuel L Jackson was at his usual humorous best as he anchored the Annual BET Awards which held at the Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, California. It was a night of recognition as well as an emotional one as a number of artists performed tributes for the late Whitney Houston.

That was the teary session of the event as Mariah Carey introduced a musical tribute to her late friend Whitney Houston. Monica, Brandy, and Chaka Khan all featured in the tribute singing the late singer’s hits. When Cissy Houston eventually performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in honor of her daughter, everyone in the Shrine Auditorium was teary eyes.

Over to the awards, Beyonce & Alan Ferguson shrugged of competition from Kanye West, Hype Williams, Chris Brown & Godfrey Taberez to scoop the video director of the year award. “Otis” by Kanye West & Jay-Z won the video of the year award while the duo’s group “The Throne” won the Best Group of the year.

Big Sean beat A$AP Rocky, Diggy, Future and Meek Mill for the Best New Artist award. Chris Brown was named Best Male R&B Artist while Yolanda Adams who also performed on the night won the Best Gospel of the year award beating Fred Hammond, Kim Burrell, James Fortune & FIYA and Trin-I-Tee 5:7.
