When talking about AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), the question which often comes to mind is whether it is a good investment vehicle for the short or long term. This is a massively huge company both in the U.S and the world at large. It is ranked ion the 32nd position as the largest company in the world. In the U.S, AT&T is ranked as the largest telecommunications company with revenue in excess of $120b. It is a household name.

There are several competitors that AT&T has to contend with, and work hard so that it is ahead, or at par with the best in the field. Some of these competitors include Sprint Corporation, T-Mobile USA, Inc and Verizon Communications Inc. Out o the three competitors of AT&T shown here, it is perhaps Verizon Communications Inc which comes anywhere near it in many aspects. For the most part, this company is way ahead of the competition in so many aspects.

It is based in Dallas, Texas where it has always been since its founding in 1983, and as initially known as SBC Communications Inc, until 2005 when it changed its name. More than 245k employees work for this huge, world class company which operates in the domestic telecom services industry.

What Does The Future Hold for AT&T?

AT&T is a very busy company, and it has to be lest it loses to its competitors. It is constantly being linked with various companies which  it intends to acquire and transform into its subsidiaries. In terms of growth, no one is raising any doubts about AT&T capabilities in this sector. This growth will be borne out of subscriber additions, increased sales of smartphones, expansion of the LTE coverage and growth in demand for mobile Internet.

It is already a market leader in terms of Wi-Fi where it offers its services in more than 30,000 local hotspots, hand in hand with more than 190,000 international hotspots. It is currently in talks with Leap Wireless International Inc, which is the largest operator of prepaid wireless in the U.S. How much will AT&T pay for Leap International Inc? It will part with not less than $1.2b.

Is Everything Going to be Rosy for AT&T?

A huge giant such as AT&T has to be prepared to face a few problems here and there. It is important to note that there are a few challenges and roadblocks here and there which AT&T will have to navigate its way through. The telecom environment is quite competitive and this company cannot afford to sit on its laurels in the belief that it is perched on the top where no harm can befall it. Technology continues to change at a very fast pace, and AT&T must find a way to cope.

Regardless of the challenges the company might face, AT&T offers a better deal for any investor looking at recouping his/her investments both for the short and long term.  The future is good if you can get your hands on AT&T shares.
