Tomahawk, WI 01/20/2014 (BasicsMedia) – How the great have fallen, look at the current news about Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY). When millions of other companies’ smartphones are being sold, Blackberry manages to make news even with sales of 1000 units.

The Handset Business:

Everyone knows the precarious financial condition of Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), it can barely sustain itself and everyone fears that it may wind up soon. It has come to this situation mainly due to the disastrous response to its offerings of a keypad less smartphone. The markets rejected the model and the company had to write down millions in inventories.  Now, the Intellectual Property at Blackberry is altogether a different matter. It has a wealth of IP in terms of patents in its pockets. Its messenger BBM is so powerful that even governments cannot crack the encryption.

But, it has also invested in its handset business. Foxconn, its longtime supplier, has pitched in to save the company and as per an agreement, will continue to manufacture and also take care of inventories. Blackberry had tried to sell off the handset business but did not find any suitors. Hence, even as Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) makes news when it ships 1.4 million units, Blackberry makes when it sells 1,000 yes One followed by only three big zeros. Speaks volumes about the company, pun intended.

The Other Story:

Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) and its investors are banking rather heavily on John Chen, the CEO with a magic wand. And Chen is depending on his old colleagues to help him out. On one hand, he has fired a lot of top level management and on the other hand, filled in the void with faces known to him. Among the latest to join Blackberry is Eric Johnson, formerly with SAP AG (ADR) (NYSE:SAP).  Chen has made a good choice it seems, as Johnson comes from a company known for its Enterprise focus. This is one area, Chen is confident, that can lift the company from its dumps. Blackberry wants to focus on enterprises to sell its handsets as well as its Enterprise services. It is so strong in this that even some governments depend on its security for their needs. And hence, even a sale of 1,000 handsets manages to make news.

Rather like Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), it makes news even when 6,900 units are sold in one quarter while the other giants need to sell in millions just to get one column in an article. Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) does manage to fascinate us.
