Northern,WI  9/27/2012 (BasicsMedia)  —  Callaway Golf (NYSE:ELY): Ryder Cup Starts Today and I noticed the shrinking number of publicly traded Golf stocks since Adams was aquired and taken private.  So I picked the logical one (ELY) so I could write something about the Ryder Cup.  For those of you who don’t follow Golf or watch any PGA events during the year the Ryder Cup is Europe vs America over a 3 day weekend ( Chicago this year) played using multiple competing formats.  As far as what it will do to Callaway stock..I’m not really sure, but we can talk about the price pattern of (ELY) and what shares have done over the last few years.

You will need to go back to 2008 to see positive trading in ELY.  Of course if you dont know..Ely was the first name of founder Ely Calloway a master club maker.  Shares were $17 per share as we entered 2008 and have traded between $5 and $6 (with the exception of a $10 pop in 2010) since the +$1B marketcap they enjoyed in 2008.  I think this was the tail end of unfettered demand for Calloway clubs which peaked in the 90’s.  Creative product development has kept them in the game since the 90’s ..but they have never achieved the status they experienced in the 80’s and 90’s.

The Ryder Cup (officially the Ryder Cup Matches) is a biennial golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is also the name of the trophy, after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder. The Ryder Cup, and its counterpart the Presidents Cup, are unusual in the world of professional sports, since despite being high-profile events that bring in tens of millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship revenue the players receive no prize money. The event also has a significant financial impact on the local economy.

Watch the Ryder Cup !! It is great theater in sports….
