Tomahawk, WI 01/28/2014 (BasicsMedia) –  J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) has not released its holiday sales report in January 2014 and instead have put out a press release entitled “2013 Sustainability Report” in regard to its environmental initiatives undertaken by it. The reason for not releasing the holiday sales figure cannot be exactly pin pointed but analysts believe that it is mainly due to J.C. Penney Company’s weak performance in the holiday quarter.

The height of absurdity is that in its “2013 Sustainability Report” J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) has merely made a vague statement on its holiday sales stating that “the Company is pleased with its performance for the holiday period, showing continued progress in its turnaround efforts. Customers responded well to the Company’s offerings this holiday shopping season, both in store and online.” Analysts wonder that whether J.C. Penney Company is actually “pleased” with its holiday performance or is it just misguiding its investors only to buy time for either the company’s restructuring or for putting in its papers.

J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) had earlier revealed that it would be closing down 33 of its stores and cutting 2000 jobs in a cost-cutting initiative to reinvent its business. This initiative is seen by many critics as the starting point of the end of J.C. Penney Company as they believe that these steps are not enough to revive a company of J.C. Penney’s stature. However, analysts believe that this a step in the right direction as rebranding, offering more discounts and closing down unprofitable stores will help in reorganizing and reinventing J.C. Penney Company which may give them a chance for a much awaited turnaround.

Critics have criticized J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) for concentrating more on increasing its profit margins then on real basic issues like improving customer foot falls in its stores and on better marketing of its products. J.C. Penney Company’s CEO Mike Ullman’s turnaround strategy may be showing early signs of effectiveness however with no clarity on either sales or earnings figures of J.C. Penney Company for this quarter the debate on its revival or its downfall cannot be put to rest just yet.
