Tomahawk, WI 9/24/2013 (BasicsMedia) – Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced that it is introducing new products into the market. These two products mark a departure from the products which MSFT has been focusing on up to date. The two new products are Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro, two new mobile devices which are designed to get a share of the market which is currently dominated by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad. These two devices are labeled the next generation tablets. It is high time that MSFT showed its clear intentions to diversify bearing in mind the dwindling PC sales.

MSFT Must Learn to Diversify from its Window OS

MSFT is a global brand and its name is associated closely with the Windows Operating System. It has been accused a lot of being preoccupied with producing products which are good for desktops, laptops and other similar devices. It has never hidden the fact that it is obsessed with making software designed to appease the Operating System market. The call for MSFT to diversify and spread its wings further to cover new products has been mounting in the recent past. It is probable that the new Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro tablets are an answer to this call.

Apple Inc has been the market leader with its iPad which have been dominant for quite a while. The fact that MSFT is bringing its Surface 2 tablets into this market doesn’t mean that Apple will cede ground without much of a fight. Apple has been more innovative than MSFT over the last five years or so. Moreover, everything it has come up with has been well received in the market. The same cannot be said regarding MSFT, and even its Windows OS was at one time considered a major mistake when the company came up with Windows Vista, whose sales were very poor.

Market Responds Positively to MSFT’s New Products

This news has been received quite well by the market. The stock has seen an increase since it announced that it had finished working on its new tablets and was about to release them into the market. While it is still not clear how much MSFT will charge for these new products, if they are designed to make the company able to compete against the likes of Apple Inc, then it is safe to say that its price will be set with this goal in mind. MSFT’s sales of the earlier versions of the Surface tablet hasn’t been good. In Q1 2013, it only sold 900,000 units.

MSFT’s share of this market based on its Surface tablets is only reported to be a mere 1.8%. If it is to make similar sales to Apple Inc, which sold more than 34 million units in the same period, it has to do a lot of work. It cannot afford to make mistakes when it is considered a new entrant compared to other giants such as Apple and Google. Whereas the new Surface tablets are not yet in the market, if they are not more powerful than what the company already brought before, the company will suffer a lot of backlash from the ever demanding public which uses tablets.
