Tomahawk, WI 12/17/2013 (BasicsMedia) – Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) is battling Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) for the control social networking dollar. At the moment, FB can be said to have a comfortable lead against the opponent in terms of revenue generation and user count.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s recent IPO has given it a lot of media coverage which it is using to its advantage. The company is cutting deals with partners to improve its user experience and increase revenue. FB is also seen doing the same. FB recently added a feature to its platform which allows users to see which devices their friends are using to access the service. Users are able to know whether the person they are chatting with is on a mobile device or PC.

In a counter, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has brought in a feature which allows users to see the tweets from their neighbors by location. The microblogging platform is showing users tweets that are generated from locations close to them. However, users have to activate this feature to see the “Nearby” tweets.

This feature is expected to take interaction on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) to a whole new level and perhaps play a role in attracting more users to the platform.

News Feed

Streaming of media content on social network sites has been the latest battle frontier. The leading social networking companies have been seeking to bring in more internet visitors to their websites by enticing them with news. FB, in particular, has reported increased traffic to the website due to increased improvement of its news feed feature. On its part, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has gone beyond streaming news text to offering video news in conjunction with Comcast.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) are seen partnering with numerous news outlets to ensure that their users get a variety of news items and at top quality. The reason news feed has become such a popular feature in the social network platform is due to studies which continue to reveal that more and more people are consuming news on social networking sites.

Mobile war

TWTR provides its news feed on mobile and desktop devices. This ensures a wider reach to internet users. Adding more mobile users is now the war that the giant social networking sites are fighting each other for. This is because an increasing number of people are using smartphones to access the Internet.

Interactive mobile features for social networking platforms seem to be the winning formula. That is why TWTR’s inclusion of Nearby tweets is likely to shake its rival, FB, which has been seen investing more in mobile messaging apps.

Existing challenge

TWTR is basking in the glory of its successful IPO. However, the company is facing the challenge of proving its true value to investors. The fact that its financial performance since inception has not been attractive makes it to function in deficit compared to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which is giving profits and has just been added to the S&P 500 Index.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) needs to bring in more advertisers and properly monetize its platform to generate higher revenue. At the same point, the company should be looking at expansion without increasing its expenses so that it can have solid profits. It remains to be seen how Nearby tweet feature will help it add value to shareholders.
